KISS at the Houston Rodeo: A Wild Ride
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has seen its fair share of legends: George Strait, Garth Brooks and Willie Nelson to name a few. Country stars are the usual suspects, but back in 2011, fans got something entirely unexpected…KISS.
Yes, that KISS. The guys with face paint, leather and 7″ platform boots. The band, known for fire, blood and loud guitars, took over a stage usually reserved for cowboy hats and fiddles. It was one of the most unlikely bookings in the Rodeo’s 93-year history.

At first, people weren’t sure how they would be revieved. Would Rodeo-goers, many in Wranglers and boots, be interested in a glam rock spectacle? Turns out, the crowd loved it. KISS played hits like “Rock and Roll All Nite” and “Detroit Rock City” with full pyrotechnics. It wasn’t your average Rodeo night, and that’s exactly why it worked. The crowd was on its feet the entire performance.
Rodeo is about more than just music, it’s about large crowds, big energy and memorable moments. KISS brought all that and more. They proved that even in an event steeped in tradition, there’s room for something totally different.
So, if you’re thinking the Houston Rodeo is only for country acts, think again. Over the years, Rodeo has had pop stars, rappers and even hard rockers like KISS. Different genres every year is what keeps Rodeo exciting year after year.
No one expected KISS to fit in at a Rodeo. However, they rocked the dirt-covered stage and left everyone yelling for more. That’s what makes them the most unlikely, yet unforgettable performers in Rodeo history.
