CMA Awards 2024: Nominations Breakdown

The 2024 CMA Awards are heating up with some big names leading the nominations. Here’s a quick look at who’s in the running this year:

1. Morgan Wallen Leads the Pack

  • Total Nominations: 7
  • Key Categories: Entertainer of the Year, Single of the Year

Morgan Wallen has emerged as the frontrunner in the 2024 CMA Awards nominations, leading the pack with seven nods. This comes after Wallen’s last CMA victory four years ago when he was named New Artist of the Year. Despite a controversial moment that followed shortly after, Wallen’s musical influence remains strong, earning him nominations in top categories including Entertainer of the Year, where he competes with Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, and newcomer Jelly Roll.

2. Close Contenders

  • Cody Johnson & Chris Stapleton: 5 nominations each
  • Post Malone & Lainey Wilson: 4 nominations each

Chris Stapleton, who has gathers the most nominations without a win for Entertainer of the Year, is back in the race with his eighth nod. Cody Johnson, who also received five nominations this year, continues his rise in the country music scene. Notably, Post Malone, who has been making waves in the country genre, and Lainey Wilson, each secured four nominations, reflecting their growing influence in the industry.

3. Top Album Contenders

  • Jelly Roll’s Whitsitt Chapel: Surprised everyone by securing a spot
  • Chris Stapleton’s Starting Over: Stapleton’s fifth consecutive Album of the Year nod
  • Luke Combs’ Fathers & Sons: Fourth consecutive nomination

Jelly Roll’s album “Whitsitt Chapel” is one of the surprising contenders for Album of the Year. Despite being released just before the close of last year’s eligibility period, it qualified due to the majority of its consumption occurring within this year’s eligibility window. Stapleton’s “Starting Over” and Combs’ “Fathers & Sons” also made the cut, continuing their streak of recognition in this category.

4. Entertainer of the Year Nominees

  • Luke Combs
  • Jelly Roll
  • Chris Stapleton
  • Morgan Wallen
  • Lainey Wilson

5. New Artist of the Year Standouts

  • Megan Moroney
  • Shaboozey
  • Bailey Zimmerman

6. Beyoncé’s Absence

  • Beyoncé’s album Cowboy Carter wasn’t considered a country album and didn’t make the nominations list.

In a noteworthy absence, Beyoncé did not appear on the ballot despite the anticipation surrounding her “Cowboy Carter” album. Her Instagram post earlier this year clarified that while the album draws from her experiences in country music, it remains distinctly a “Beyoncé” album rather than a traditional country record.
